Puzzles Friday

In Fruit of the Spirit it was joy, joy, joy!  They know the tune and the lesson of being joyful in the things we love.  The children had art today.  In reading it was My Face. We have had a couple of sick children that went home with sore throats and tummy aches.  So be aware if you see early signs of sickness.  I have sent home some Short and Long Vowel examples for you to reference from the Explode the Code YTD assessment.  In Let’s Find Out from Scholastic it was Let’s Celebrate – we went online and discussed some holidays that fall around this time of year.   The children had Movement class today and practiced their routine.  In class I started playing the song they will sing at the Christmas play during a writing segment.

In math we began our new unit Counting to One Hundred and after the introduction we did lesson 6-1.  To end our day, and through the generosity of Ezekial’s mom Becky, we played team puzzle making.  Becky donated a dozen or so puzzles to the classroom and I for one enjoyed watching them challenged with some old fashioned fun games.

Enjoy your weekend!

Rabbits

Today we read Rabbits in class. In handwriting it was lowercase “v” with a sentence writing exercise.  The children had PE today with Mr. Ken.  It was Explode the Code Online after lunch and a math benchmark assessment for all our units from one to four. It’s a look back to see that the child has retained the concepts in these lessons.  Please take a moment to review the grades.  Some areas that children have problems with in this first quarter are:

  •      Counting numbers in the 11-20 range
  •      The concept of fewer and more in the range 1 and 2 fewer or more than a given number.
  • In a sequence of objects.  What object is first, second, third or forth?

We had a quick twenty minute Christmas play practice with Miss Rachel at the end of the day.

Please get the children’s permission slips back to me for The Wizard of Oz.  I sent an email out to all parents noting which parents are coming and how many adult tickets they wanted.  Please insure it is correct.

Neighborhoods

Today we read Pond Animals.  Today we worked on phonics with Explode the Code Lesson 3, and beginning and ending sounds.  We had our mentor reader in today, as we did yesterday, to work with the children one on one.  Those who finished journaled and expanded on their stories or started new ones.  In computer lab it was Explode the Code.

If you want to see exactly what your child is having difficulties with in Explode the Code look at the sign in screen and click the small box below to see their progress report.  From here you can drill down in the areas they need practice in with examples of the words they are having trouble deciphering.  Again you can stop by and we can look at together if you wish.

In math it was our end of unit assessment.  I will send that home tomorrow for you to review and see where your child may be having difficulties.  In addition, I will do a summary assessment (benchmark) of units 1-4.

In social studies we finished our community and neighborhoods unit with a discussion about celebrations.  We will now move on to a heritage unit.

A big thank you to parents that have bought books for your children or friends and our classroom.  Your generosity is much appreciated.  I bought some early readers with the certificates.

Mom and I

In reading we read Mom and I.  We added to our word wall today and reviewed words that every kindergartner should know.  We do a few new words a week, and review from past weeks.  In handwriting it was lowercase “s”, and write a sentence with an “s” word.  I started with them a phonic workbook which will help them with beginning and ending sounds.  The children had music today and in science we finished up the subject of length using our measurements out in the hallway.

I sent permission sheets home for for The Wizard of Oz. I have tickets for all the adults that indicated they wanted to accompany us on this field trip.

The Book Fair is still in full swing and a great opportunity to buy books for your child, presents for others or our classroom.  We had Jessie, Miss Kimberly and Jacob come in our room to do book reviews of four of the books they thought kindergarteners would like.

Reminder that picture re-take day is tomorrow.

Hair

Welcome back everyone.  Today we read My Hair.  In handwriting it was lowercase “o”.  We will be transitioning to using lowercase as they learn their lower case letters.  In addition I am having them write a sentence in their handwriting books with an “o” word as I place more and more emphasis on sentence writing.   The children finished their Explode the Code Lesson 2 workbooks and I am sending them home.  This supports what we do in the computer lab.

We did not have Spanish today as Miss Debbie spent Thanksgiving away from the area and will not be home until tomorrow.  So during this time Miss Rachel, our movement teacher, came in to give our class extra practice for the Christmas Play.  In math it was lesson 5-5 which will complete this unit of numbers from 11-20.  Tomorrow will be our end of unit assessment.  In social studies we talked about neighborhood celebrations.

I have finished the progress reports and they will be coming out soon.  I am sending home in their folders their Explode the Code Progress report from on-line.  What you want to look for is basic or better in their performance grade.  Where you see Below Basic please look to the Skill Description to see what area your child might be having difficulties with.  If you go on-line under your child’s account you can drill down to see what skill is not being accomplished at grade level and further down you can see the questions that your child is missing.  If you need help finding this information please see me and we can go over it or I can steer you in the right direction.  Mastering their sounding skills is the key to success in Explode the Code and will immeasurably help with their writing and spelling.

I am happy to say we have enough parents now to attend The Wizard of Oz.  If you have not responded and want to come (Adults)?  I need to know by tomorrow morning at the latest.

Happy Thanksgiving

In reading we read My Room.  Miss Linda was in to listen to the children read.  Look in their folder for the school newspaper, put out by the students under the guidance of Miss Jena.  In computer lab it was their choice between IXL and Explode the Code.  After we fitted the children with their pilgrim hats it was off to The Feast.  It was very well attended and the food was yummy and plentiful.  The teachers put on a skit and then it was time for the Turkey Trot!

Reminder that if a parent wants to go with us to The Wizard of Oz I need to know by Tuesday morning next week to order tickets.

  • Apple Fundraiser orders are due back November 27th
  • Photo Re-Takes November 28th

The Turkey Trot

Applesauce

In reading it was Opposites.  We had Miss Anna in to listen to the children read.  I have moved some of the children up a level in their reading as a challenge after talking to our mentors and reviewing their notes.

It was applesauce making day today with our class making applesauce.  Everyone participated by peeling apples and adding the spices and sugar.  The school smelled so good and by the end of the day our applesauce had cooked down and is now in the fridge for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving Feast.  We journaled about applesauce.  In math we did lesson 5-4.  The kids had music today and we ended our days doing Thanksgiving place-mats.  While they were doing that I made their pilgrim hats for tomorrow.

I sent out a special email about going to Seattle to see The Wizard of Oz at the Seattle Children’s Theater.  Please decide if you want to come with your child as I have to confirm by next Tuesday.

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Today we read My Dog.  We talked about Thanksgiving and what it means.  And what better to tell the story than Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving, and the Mayflower Story.  Kids returned to journaling and the topic was Thanksgiving.  Spanish was canceled today but we did some pilgrim art and then the lights went out just as we started math.  Thank you all for coming in early to pick up the kids.  As with these things, you never know how long the power will be out.  We had scheduled a special recycling expert in today for social studies but had to cancel.  I am sure we can get her back in the near future.

In math we did manage to celebrate some IXL milestones –

  • Jack – 2 hours practicing
  • Sabrina – 1,500 problems

Reminder about our Thanksgiving Feast this Wednesday at 11:00 AM.

PJ’s, Popcorn and a Movie

Well they made it through the day in their PJ’s! We had Fruit of the Spirit this morning and a discussion again about what love is and how God loves us.  Children had Art today.  In reading it was In and Out.  We read through our Let’s Find Out magazine and watched a video about animals that hibernate.  Kids also had Creative Movement.  In Science it was a discussion about our hands which we did not finish as it was movie time.  Madagascar was the choice.

We had almost everyone in the class get IXL award certificates today.  We did practice in school on Wednesday so that triggered some awards.

Day 50

Today we read Maria Goes to School.  In handwriting we started our lowercase letters with the letter “c”.  Children had PE today in “The Octagon”.  In computer lab it was Explode the Code.  For math it was lesson  5-3, and in science we did hand prints to be used in our next lesson.

This week the kids earned a pizza party tomorrow.  So PJ’s and pillow pets are the order of the day.  They will get a movie and popcorn as well.
