There Is Mischief About

In reading it was I Can Be.  Miss Anna was in to mentor read with the children.  After recess it was Envision Math lesson 10-3 and working with the numbers 17, 18, and 19.  We celebrated Thomas and Sydney for both practicing IXL math for 20 hours.  The children did a fun leprechaun craft which is out in the hall, and speaking of leprechauns, our classroom was trashed this morning like I have never seen, plus other signs that leprechauns were near the traps, but alas, no one caught one.  Did I say the bathroom toilet water was all a brilliant shade of green.

The children had Music today with Miss Amy.  In Social Studies we began our Rain-forest project which you can follow along in the hallway.  Today we watched the IMAX film on The Rain-forest and then started to create our own rain-forest in the under story with leaves, ferns, grasses, tress and vines.  Oh and rain!

We celebrated in IXL math:

We made 100 day hats and wrote some form of 100 on it.  The children presented their 100 items and I made all of them count them out, regroup them, and count again.  Of course I treated them with the 100 M&M’s that I contributed to the day.  It was a good time!

Word Builder and Toto

Today we read Games We Play.  Miss Anna was in to mentor read with the students.  In handwriting it was lowercase “e” and a continuation of Explode the Code lesson 6 in the classroom.  From there they moved on to writing the room and their journals.  I love when they come to me and say “can we journal during choice time?”.  Today was music with Miss Amy.  In math it was lesson 7-2.

I have introduced a word building activity which is used to help the children blend words and start to learn spelling.  We celebrated the following IXL achievements.  This class is amazing in the time they are spending pushing their math skills onward and upward. I remind you that these are optional activities  which makes these achievements extra special.

  • Jack – 1,000 questions
  • Sydney – 2,000 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions
  • Annie – 4,500 questions
  • Ezekial – 5 hours practicing
  • Payton – 5 hours practicing
Today we made our monthly library visit with Mrs. Huber.  Today she had a frog on her head.  She always has some type of whimsical thing on her red head.  Today’s stories all had winter themes.
In the spirit of The Wizard of Oz I have added the story book to our library and a little stuffed Toto dog that has been officially adopted.  Now I need to find a copy of the movie as they are clamoring for it!

Day 70

Today we read Applesauce in class.  In handwriting it was lowercase “d”.  We also wrote the room with “D” words.  We had a mixed bag of the children reading to me from our early reader box,  journaling or both.  In writing we wrote cards using the cards the children created in art last Friday.  We especially  need to know how much we care for our children and loved ones. A little love coming back to you.  The children had Spanish today and in math we did one last review of number patterns and skip counting with another end of unit benchmark test.  The children all did much better.

We celebrated some IXL achievements:

  • Jack – 5 hours of practice
  • Thomas – 5 hours of practice and 1,000 questions answered
  • Sydney – 10 hours of practice
  • Luke – 3,000 questions answered

Alexcia and her mom baked this weekend and treated the class to some very flavorful cake pops (I think that’s what you call them – they were really good and the children were delighted).

The Parade

In reading we read Vegetables.  The children had a full run through with Miss Rachel of the Christmas Play, The Three Trees.  They will have another later this week in preparation for Thursday’s performance at 6:30 PM.
NOTE:  They want the children to be here one hour before curtain time (5:30 PM) and they are to wear dark clothing, both top and bottom.  No Glitz.

I am happy at the way most of the children have taken to the early readers I put out in the classroom and after some practice they are reading them to me in class.  The children had Spanish today and in Math it was an extended lesson 6-4.  In kindergarten we are striving by the end of the year to get everyone counting to 100 by one’s, fives, and ten’s (we call that skip counting ) and recognizing the numbers 1-100.
We celebrated the following IXL achievements in math:

  •  Ezekial – 500 questions
  • Jack – 500 questions
  • Sydney – 1,500 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions and 10 hours practicing

In social studies it was the introduction to our new unit The Parade.  It will be a celebration of culture and heritage.  Please note you will need to get a shoe box.  You will use it design a “float” for our parade which defines your heritage as a family.  Further information will be forthcoming.

Hair

Welcome back everyone.  Today we read My Hair.  In handwriting it was lowercase “o”.  We will be transitioning to using lowercase as they learn their lower case letters.  In addition I am having them write a sentence in their handwriting books with an “o” word as I place more and more emphasis on sentence writing.   The children finished their Explode the Code Lesson 2 workbooks and I am sending them home.  This supports what we do in the computer lab.

We did not have Spanish today as Miss Debbie spent Thanksgiving away from the area and will not be home until tomorrow.  So during this time Miss Rachel, our movement teacher, came in to give our class extra practice for the Christmas Play.  In math it was lesson 5-5 which will complete this unit of numbers from 11-20.  Tomorrow will be our end of unit assessment.  In social studies we talked about neighborhood celebrations.

I have finished the progress reports and they will be coming out soon.  I am sending home in their folders their Explode the Code Progress report from on-line.  What you want to look for is basic or better in their performance grade.  Where you see Below Basic please look to the Skill Description to see what area your child might be having difficulties with.  If you go on-line under your child’s account you can drill down to see what skill is not being accomplished at grade level and further down you can see the questions that your child is missing.  If you need help finding this information please see me and we can go over it or I can steer you in the right direction.  Mastering their sounding skills is the key to success in Explode the Code and will immeasurably help with their writing and spelling.

I am happy to say we have enough parents now to attend The Wizard of Oz.  If you have not responded and want to come (Adults)?  I need to know by tomorrow morning at the latest.

Celebrations for our IXL Wizards

  • Thomas 500 Questions
  •  Sydney 5 Hours and 1,000 Questions
  • Luke 10 Hours and 2,500 Questions
  • Annie 3,500 Questions
