Holiday Joy

Such a big Miracle in such a little child.

Today was a kick back day.  We did read in the morning and in writing we did a formal wish list to Santa.  Luke needed both the front and the back of his letter.  Good luck Luke!  The kids had PE  and that knocked some wind out of their sails.  Beading was also the order of the day.  My fingers are ready to fall off after tying 237 knots in necklaces, bracelets, and ankle bracelets.  I did get some relief when Miss Anna, and Miss Michelle arrived  for an end of school party of games and treats.

Many wishes to you and your families for a joyous Christmas and Happy New Year.

The Wizard of Oz

Today we read Carlos and His Teacher.  Miss Linda was in to read and mentor the kiddies, and with an early lunch in our bellies we were off to see The Wizard of Oz.  It was a wonderful show and we were center stage in the front for all of the magic that only a live performance can bring.  Looking at the children’s wide eyes was truly magical.

Thank you to our wonderful parents for being chaperones and getting us safely there and back.  Now it is one more day of school before our well deserved Christmas Break.  Reminder we will have a classroom Christmas party tomorrow hosted by some of our moms.

Handfuls

Today we read Animals Can Move.  Miss Anna was in to listen and help the children read.  In handwriting it was lowercase “u”.  In phonics it was Explode the Code lesson 5.  We finished our December Memories book.  The children had music today.  In math it was an Introduction to Unit 7.  In Unit 7 the children will work with number sentences and the conventional form of problem solving.  Ex. 2+2=4 .  In science we finished with our hands with the topic of handfuls.  We measured with our hands how many small cubes we could pick up and how large our hand is in terms of cubes as well.

Surprisingly some of the smaller children had larger hands. See the accompanying chart.

In the fun department we did get to see the end of The Velveteen Rabbit in group time, and we started The Polar Express at the end of the day.  Yes, the children have been excited as Christmas gets closer.

Day 70

Today we read Applesauce in class.  In handwriting it was lowercase “d”.  We also wrote the room with “D” words.  We had a mixed bag of the children reading to me from our early reader box,  journaling or both.  In writing we wrote cards using the cards the children created in art last Friday.  We especially  need to know how much we care for our children and loved ones. A little love coming back to you.  The children had Spanish today and in math we did one last review of number patterns and skip counting with another end of unit benchmark test.  The children all did much better.

We celebrated some IXL achievements:

  • Jack – 5 hours of practice
  • Thomas – 5 hours of practice and 1,000 questions answered
  • Sydney – 10 hours of practice
  • Luke – 3,000 questions answered

Alexcia and her mom baked this weekend and treated the class to some very flavorful cake pops (I think that’s what you call them – they were really good and the children were delighted).

The Velveteen Rabbit

In reading it was Animal Sounds.  We started our memories book for December.  The children had art today designing the beginning of a holiday card.  We will compose it next week.  The children had sharing today.  In math it was re-teaching skip counting.  We skip counted in morning group and throughout the day.  We went over the test again. Please look at their test result  for where they may be having trouble.  I will go over it again on Monday and do another assessment.

In morning group I started reading The Velveteen Rabbit and we finished the day with part of the movie, The Velveteen Rabbit.

Enjoy your weekend

Showtime

We had a dress rehearsal practice first thing this morning for tonight’s performance.    Please have the children here at 5:30 – 5:45 in the classroom.  Remember to wear something dark.  Some of the costumes cover most of them so check with them if their costume covers them so what they wear should not make a difference.

We did lesson 4 in Explode the Code and practiced more in computer lab after lunch.  In math we had our end of unit test and it was clear that too many did not get it.  Enough that I will reteach it to most of them again.  This unit is all about counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and estimating (about how many).  I am sending home some stay at home charts if you wish to work with them.  Look in their Envision workbooks that I sent home at the beginning of school.  The Unit is Topic 6.

NOTE:  Mrs. Huber says she can not extend the borrowing time on books from the Duvall Library.  She use to just automatically extend the time but cannot anymore.  I believe everyone is up to date with books needing to be returned  by Jan 12th or 14th.

The Elf on the Shelf Special is on tomorrow night on CBS at 9:30 PM.  The kids love them.  Before that on CBS is Rudolph the Red Nosed Reeindeer at 8:00, and Yes, Virginia at 9:00 PM.

I will see many of you tonight I hope.

Favorite Things

In reading we read Animal Coverings.  For handwriting it was lowercase “g” and in phonics it was practice with the letter”F” beginning and ending sounds.  Some got a chance to journal and I am pleased that many of the boys and girls are asking to journal and to read to me from our selection of early readers.  We had computer lab and the kids could choose from IXL math or Explode the Code. Most choose IXL.  In math it was our last lesson in Unit 6, 6-6.  The children are beginning to see the benefit of being able to count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.  They are having some problems finding the patterns.  I had to spend some extra time in approaching different ways to find the pattern in numbers.  Look at their worksheet from today.  Practice skip counting with them.  Kindergarteners are expected to know by first grade skip counting 10’s and 5’s at the very least.  Just don’t start at 5, 10, 15, 20.  Start at 20 or 30.

Examples
30 40 50 __ 70 80
56 57 58 __ 60 61
40 30 __ 10
16 18 20 __ 24

Hands

Today we read Up and Down as we continue along our B Level books.  After circle time we watched as I narrated The Three Trees , which is the story that we have based the Christmas play on.  There was rehearsal today.  The student council met today with Annie and Tucker reporting back on the meeting.  Thank yous were given for the Suggestion Box our kindergartners made for the school.  In spelling it was our words of the week for our word wall.  As I type I hear them setting up for the pre-school play tonight and tomorrow night.  The children had music today, but it was cut short so the children could help decorate the stage for our performances.

In math it was lesson 6-5 and our hundred chart.  We looked for patterns in the chart.  Today looking for even numbers.

In science our lesson was on the hand as we continue  on the theme of Ourselves and Others.  We talked about the parts of our hands, and what we can do with our hands.

The Parade

In reading we read Vegetables.  The children had a full run through with Miss Rachel of the Christmas Play, The Three Trees.  They will have another later this week in preparation for Thursday’s performance at 6:30 PM.
NOTE:  They want the children to be here one hour before curtain time (5:30 PM) and they are to wear dark clothing, both top and bottom.  No Glitz.

I am happy at the way most of the children have taken to the early readers I put out in the classroom and after some practice they are reading them to me in class.  The children had Spanish today and in Math it was an extended lesson 6-4.  In kindergarten we are striving by the end of the year to get everyone counting to 100 by one’s, fives, and ten’s (we call that skip counting ) and recognizing the numbers 1-100.
We celebrated the following IXL achievements in math:

  •  Ezekial – 500 questions
  • Jack – 500 questions
  • Sydney – 1,500 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions and 10 hours practicing

In social studies it was the introduction to our new unit The Parade.  It will be a celebration of culture and heritage.  Please note you will need to get a shoe box.  You will use it design a “float” for our parade which defines your heritage as a family.  Further information will be forthcoming.
