There Is Mischief About

In reading it was I Can Be.  Miss Anna was in to mentor read with the children.  After recess it was Envision Math lesson 10-3 and working with the numbers 17, 18, and 19.  We celebrated Thomas and Sydney for both practicing IXL math for 20 hours.  The children did a fun leprechaun craft which is out in the hall, and speaking of leprechauns, our classroom was trashed this morning like I have never seen, plus other signs that leprechauns were near the traps, but alas, no one caught one.  Did I say the bathroom toilet water was all a brilliant shade of green.

The children had Music today with Miss Amy.  In Social Studies we began our Rain-forest project which you can follow along in the hallway.  Today we watched the IMAX film on The Rain-forest and then started to create our own rain-forest in the under story with leaves, ferns, grasses, tress and vines.  Oh and rain!

Dr. Seuss Week

Today starts Dr. Seuss Week at Hillside ending with Friday night’s carnival of fun!

In reading we read Allie and Ollie.  This is the start of the C level books for everyone, with some pushing on to level D and beyond.  Today instead of Math being in the afternoon I did it right after morning recess, and if this morning is any indicator they appeared much more awake.  With that change we will be doing phonics, handwriting and writing in the after right after Science or Social Studies.

In Math it was lesson 9-5.   Celebrated IXL milestones with:

  • Payton 1,000 questions answered
  • Tucker 2,000 questions answered
  • Thomas 3,000 questions answered
  • Maddie 10 Hours of practice

In handwriting it was the letter “B”, with sentences.   We did a Let’s Find Out magazine, which was all about teeth and their care.  We also found some time to do a Dr. Seuss  word find before Science.  In Science it was Lesson 2 in Balls and Ramps with some more ball comparisons along with observing, rolling and bouncing balls.

Martin Luther King – Peace

Today we read It Is School Time.  Miss Linda was in to mentor the children with reading.  In handwriting is was lowercase “p” along with write the room and finishing up Explode the Code lesson 7 and writing the room.  We had Explode the Code in computer lab.  For Social Studies we had a lesson about The Reverend Martin Luther King and how African Americans were treated not that long ago.  Since Dr. King promoted peaceful disobedience we made paper plate doves.

We celebrated IXL achievements for:

  • Thomas – 10 hours practice and 1,500 problems completed
  • Jack – 10 hours of practice
  • Rutger – 5 hours of practice and 1,000 problems completed

Day 70

Today we read Applesauce in class.  In handwriting it was lowercase “d”.  We also wrote the room with “D” words.  We had a mixed bag of the children reading to me from our early reader box,  journaling or both.  In writing we wrote cards using the cards the children created in art last Friday.  We especially  need to know how much we care for our children and loved ones. A little love coming back to you.  The children had Spanish today and in math we did one last review of number patterns and skip counting with another end of unit benchmark test.  The children all did much better.

We celebrated some IXL achievements:

  • Jack – 5 hours of practice
  • Thomas – 5 hours of practice and 1,000 questions answered
  • Sydney – 10 hours of practice
  • Luke – 3,000 questions answered

Alexcia and her mom baked this weekend and treated the class to some very flavorful cake pops (I think that’s what you call them – they were really good and the children were delighted).

Hair

Welcome back everyone.  Today we read My Hair.  In handwriting it was lowercase “o”.  We will be transitioning to using lowercase as they learn their lower case letters.  In addition I am having them write a sentence in their handwriting books with an “o” word as I place more and more emphasis on sentence writing.   The children finished their Explode the Code Lesson 2 workbooks and I am sending them home.  This supports what we do in the computer lab.

We did not have Spanish today as Miss Debbie spent Thanksgiving away from the area and will not be home until tomorrow.  So during this time Miss Rachel, our movement teacher, came in to give our class extra practice for the Christmas Play.  In math it was lesson 5-5 which will complete this unit of numbers from 11-20.  Tomorrow will be our end of unit assessment.  In social studies we talked about neighborhood celebrations.

I have finished the progress reports and they will be coming out soon.  I am sending home in their folders their Explode the Code Progress report from on-line.  What you want to look for is basic or better in their performance grade.  Where you see Below Basic please look to the Skill Description to see what area your child might be having difficulties with.  If you go on-line under your child’s account you can drill down to see what skill is not being accomplished at grade level and further down you can see the questions that your child is missing.  If you need help finding this information please see me and we can go over it or I can steer you in the right direction.  Mastering their sounding skills is the key to success in Explode the Code and will immeasurably help with their writing and spelling.

I am happy to say we have enough parents now to attend The Wizard of Oz.  If you have not responded and want to come (Adults)?  I need to know by tomorrow morning at the latest.

Celebrations for our IXL Wizards

Day 25

In reading we read The Coast.  In handwriting it was capital letter “Y”.  We wrote the room with some difficulty finding “Y” words, but a few managed ten words.  We had time for most to journal before we did beginning sounds with the letter “C”.  The kids had music today.  Only a three star day in music so we lost a star in our homeroom and managed to end the day with only two stars.  In math it was lesson 3-3.  In science it was back to the senses and working in our Senses Journal.   I read them two books about the senses – Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear and  Me and My Senses.

Luke added a missing tooth to the missing teeth chart joining Tucker, Thomas, and Payton.

We celebrated milestones in IXL for :

Nature Vision Field Trip

It was off to Carnation and Nature Vision today.  After crossing the wobbly bridge we were treated to a nature walk and talk.  The children learned about many things that inhabit our forest, both plants and animals.  While we did not see any wildlife, we did get an up close look at some animal pelts and skulls. The day was beautiful.  Comfortably cool as we strolled along paths and then sat to enjoy our lunches.  Thank you to our chaperons/drivers Anna Paape (Jack and Thomas), Scott Thomas (Sydney), Angela Thompson (Luke), and Papa and Nini (Alexcia’s grandparents).

We got back in time for recess and a snack before computer lab.  In computer lab we did Explode the Code.  We finished our work day with reading today’s book Summer Picnic.

Look in the take home folders for pledge/donations sheets for those who need to send in their pledge money.

Most of the kiddos tell me they read their daily classroom book every night. Please consider having your child take the pledge to read each night amount of minutes that they choose.

Raz-Kids

Today we read Over in class.  After recess  I did an introduction to Raz-Kids.  Ras-Kids is the on-line reading program that follows our in class reading.  These are the books they bring home and hopefully read to you.  In Raz-Kids the children can re-read their books or move forward at a pace they are comfortable with.  With this program they use the microphones from their headsets to record and listen to themselves reading.  I can also assign books to them and set up reward schedules for each child.  Today in our computer lab  I let them explore this program.  At this point I am thinking about doing one day of Explore the Code and the next day of Rz-Kids in school.  Should you wish your child to bring home their headset to practice at home by all means tell them to bring it home or they can now keep it in their backpack. For at home sign on it is by teacher and then by child.  I am KMANDOSKE and then the password is your child’s FIRST name.  The kids did pretty well today.  Again it is practice.  I have released all the AA books for them to do.  I ask them to listen first (the ear icon), and then to read (eye icon).  Let me know if you have any trouble.

A question asked last night was when there is limited computer time at home what is more important?  Reading will always take priority (Explode the Code and/or Raz-Kids over math (Envision and/or IXL).  Another question was more info from the specialists.  Kim is working with them to maybe once a month send out a newsletter of what each class is involved in.

In Envision Math we did lesson 2-8 as we reach an end to this unit.  Celebrations again as IXL Math is spreading like a virus with the children.  I see most of the after care kids on it after school.

  • Wyatt 2 Hours of Practice
  • Tucker 100 Problems
  • Annie 2 Hours of Practice
  • Thomas 1 Hour of Practice
  • Rutger 100 Problems
  • ‘Alexcia 200 Problems
  • Sabrina 500 Problems
In Social Studies we did a lesson on mapping.  I gave them a template with some landmarks of our classroom and asked them to fill in some details.  For HOMEWORK due next week I sent home a piece of card stock for them to map their bedroom or other favorite room in the house.  ONLY ONE ROOM.  Some wanted to do the house or the upstairs.  You can guide them but let them do most of the work.  Get them started and let them fill in details.  Labeling would be GREAT.  I will ask each one who completes it to present to the class.  We do a lot of presenting of our work.  It gives them a sense of pride, and confidence talking to the class.
