Alexcia’s Birthday

Happy Birthday Alexcia.  We celebrated her 6th birthday complete with cupcakes.

Today was mostly about pioneer life with a wonderful exhibit at Hillside Academy.  Our volunteers, along with living historians, made for a wonderful hands on selection of crafts and activities that pioneers and Native Americans would have done a hundred years ago.

In reading we read What Has These Feet?  The children had both Art and Movement class today.  In Let’s Find Out, our weekly Scholastic Magazine, we talked, read and viewed a film about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  In math it was lesson 9-4 in Envision Math.

Day 96

In reading we read The Sandwich.  For handwriting it was magic “c” and sentences.  For writing we wrote Valentines for our serviceman  Alvin, and servicewoman Brittany.  I have packed up the 1st two boxes to ship tomorrow.  The children had Spanish today and in math it was our introduction to Unit 9 and lesson 9-1.  I also introduced challenge math.  This is an activity they can do for part of our math period or during choice time.  As they progress I will give them more and more challenging problems to solve.  Congratulations to Jack for doing 1,500 problems in IXL math.

In Social Studies we started presentations of the children’s floats.  Today we listened to Jack and Thomas present their heritage float.  As a special treat Alexcia brought in some croissants to go with part of her heritage, France.

Day 90

Today we read The Picnic.  In handwriting it was lowercase “f”.  We had another round of letter dictation and writing the room.  Sentences are getting better and better! Our own Alexcia read to the class today from one of Jamie Curtis’s latest books.  A super job!  In math it was lesson 8-5.  In science we talked about time, time in the sense of a long time ago, last year, last month, and yesterday.   Also what we could do now that we could not do then?

Word Builder and Toto

Today we read Games We Play.  Miss Anna was in to mentor read with the students.  In handwriting it was lowercase “e” and a continuation of Explode the Code lesson 6 in the classroom.  From there they moved on to writing the room and their journals.  I love when they come to me and say “can we journal during choice time?”.  Today was music with Miss Amy.  In math it was lesson 7-2.

I have introduced a word building activity which is used to help the children blend words and start to learn spelling.  We celebrated the following IXL achievements.  This class is amazing in the time they are spending pushing their math skills onward and upward. I remind you that these are optional activities  which makes these achievements extra special.

  • Jack – 1,000 questions
  • Sydney – 2,000 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions
  • Annie – 4,500 questions
  • Ezekial – 5 hours practicing
  • Payton – 5 hours practicing
Today we made our monthly library visit with Mrs. Huber.  Today she had a frog on her head.  She always has some type of whimsical thing on her red head.  Today’s stories all had winter themes.
In the spirit of The Wizard of Oz I have added the story book to our library and a little stuffed Toto dog that has been officially adopted.  Now I need to find a copy of the movie as they are clamoring for it!

The Parade

In reading we read Vegetables.  The children had a full run through with Miss Rachel of the Christmas Play, The Three Trees.  They will have another later this week in preparation for Thursday’s performance at 6:30 PM.
NOTE:  They want the children to be here one hour before curtain time (5:30 PM) and they are to wear dark clothing, both top and bottom.  No Glitz.

I am happy at the way most of the children have taken to the early readers I put out in the classroom and after some practice they are reading them to me in class.  The children had Spanish today and in Math it was an extended lesson 6-4.  In kindergarten we are striving by the end of the year to get everyone counting to 100 by one’s, fives, and ten’s (we call that skip counting ) and recognizing the numbers 1-100.
We celebrated the following IXL achievements in math:

  •  Ezekial – 500 questions
  • Jack – 500 questions
  • Sydney – 1,500 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions and 10 hours practicing

In social studies it was the introduction to our new unit The Parade.  It will be a celebration of culture and heritage.  Please note you will need to get a shoe box.  You will use it design a “float” for our parade which defines your heritage as a family.  Further information will be forthcoming.

Backwards Day and Royal Icing

Oh my! What a day!  It was crazy with backwards day.  Clothes, shoes, meals and even genders. On chapel we had a great assembly of song and story telling from a local children’s book author.  I will send home a flyer with the book information of this soon to be series of books.  We had our Character Counts Awards this morning for the school.  From our class:

  • Alexcia Worthington – Always does her best work.  Despite having a broken wrist on her writing hand she never let that stop her from always trying her kindergarten best.
  • Annie Keller – In addition to her continued academic excellence, she goes out of her way to help others.
  • Madelyn Benjamin – Always willing to help others and her reading progress is really soaring to new heights.

The children had art today with an eye to perspective.  In reading it was What I Like.  We journaled about what else but – gingerbread boys and girls.  Louie the Elf was off and flying landing up near my kite on his return from the North Pole.  The children had movement today making the final preparations for the school play.

Finally our Big Buddies from Miss Suzanne’s class came up to help us decorate 100 cookies we made for the homeless and needy at Issaquah Meals.  I will deliver those tonight to be packed up with some other goodies from the youth at Good Samaritan Church in Sammamish.  Anyone with blankets or coats that would like to donate them please drop them off for me and I will get them down to them next month.

Day 29

In reading it was The School.  In handwriting it was an introduction to work writing with the emphasis on letter formation.  Thank you to Miss Anna Paape for working with some of the children in pull-out handwriting.  For writing I modeled sentence formation and to help move them away just linking words into sentences.  They are coming along.  Please feel free to look at their journals right inside the classroom anytime.

The children had Spanish today with Miss Debbie.  In math it was lesson 3-6.  We celebrated IXL acheivements for:

Alexcia – 2 Hours and 500 problems
Annie – 5 Hours practice
Jack – 1 Hour practice

Yahoo!

For social studies Annie gave a presentation of her room and we talked about places in our community and the people who work there.  Then it was drawing these places and adding them to our community board.

Our Fry’s 100  words of the week are :

  • is
  • you
  • that
  • it
  • he
  • was

They should begin to be instantly recognizable to your child.  Tomorrow I will send home a Fry’s 1st 50  words that, if you wish, you can work on your child with.  The skill is to try to say all the words in a group in one breath.  Have fun!

In their folders are forms for student picture packets if you wish to buy.

Reminder about permission slips for next week’s field trip with the school to Remlinger Farm.

Nature Vision Field Trip

It was off to Carnation and Nature Vision today.  After crossing the wobbly bridge we were treated to a nature walk and talk.  The children learned about many things that inhabit our forest, both plants and animals.  While we did not see any wildlife, we did get an up close look at some animal pelts and skulls. The day was beautiful.  Comfortably cool as we strolled along paths and then sat to enjoy our lunches.  Thank you to our chaperons/drivers Anna Paape (Jack and Thomas), Scott Thomas (Sydney), Angela Thompson (Luke), and Papa and Nini (Alexcia’s grandparents).

We got back in time for recess and a snack before computer lab.  In computer lab we did Explode the Code.  We finished our work day with reading today’s book Summer Picnic.

Look in the take home folders for pledge/donations sheets for those who need to send in their pledge money.

Most of the kiddos tell me they read their daily classroom book every night. Please consider having your child take the pledge to read each night amount of minutes that they choose.
