Word Builder and Toto

Today we read Games We Play.  Miss Anna was in to mentor read with the students.  In handwriting it was lowercase “e” and a continuation of Explode the Code lesson 6 in the classroom.  From there they moved on to writing the room and their journals.  I love when they come to me and say “can we journal during choice time?”.  Today was music with Miss Amy.  In math it was lesson 7-2.

I have introduced a word building activity which is used to help the children blend words and start to learn spelling.  We celebrated the following IXL achievements.  This class is amazing in the time they are spending pushing their math skills onward and upward. I remind you that these are optional activities  which makes these achievements extra special.

  • Jack – 1,000 questions
  • Sydney – 2,000 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions
  • Annie – 4,500 questions
  • Ezekial – 5 hours practicing
  • Payton – 5 hours practicing
Today we made our monthly library visit with Mrs. Huber.  Today she had a frog on her head.  She always has some type of whimsical thing on her red head.  Today’s stories all had winter themes.
In the spirit of The Wizard of Oz I have added the story book to our library and a little stuffed Toto dog that has been officially adopted.  Now I need to find a copy of the movie as they are clamoring for it!

The Parade

In reading we read Vegetables.  The children had a full run through with Miss Rachel of the Christmas Play, The Three Trees.  They will have another later this week in preparation for Thursday’s performance at 6:30 PM.
NOTE:  They want the children to be here one hour before curtain time (5:30 PM) and they are to wear dark clothing, both top and bottom.  No Glitz.

I am happy at the way most of the children have taken to the early readers I put out in the classroom and after some practice they are reading them to me in class.  The children had Spanish today and in Math it was an extended lesson 6-4.  In kindergarten we are striving by the end of the year to get everyone counting to 100 by one’s, fives, and ten’s (we call that skip counting ) and recognizing the numbers 1-100.
We celebrated the following IXL achievements in math:

  •  Ezekial – 500 questions
  • Jack – 500 questions
  • Sydney – 1,500 questions
  • Alexcia – 2,000 questions and 10 hours practicing

In social studies it was the introduction to our new unit The Parade.  It will be a celebration of culture and heritage.  Please note you will need to get a shoe box.  You will use it design a “float” for our parade which defines your heritage as a family.  Further information will be forthcoming.

Day 33

Today we read Baby Animals.  The letter of the day was capital letter “G”.  Children wrote the room looking for “G” words.  Some had time to journal.  We finished our October Memories.  The challenge I gave them was not to just write their numbers 1 to whatever, but to create the October calendar starting on the day of the week the 1st falls on.

They had Spanish today.  In math it was lesson 4-1.  We celebrated some IXL milestones.

  • Annie 1,000 questions answered correctly  (Nothing short of AMAZING!)
  • Wyatt and Tucker joined the 500 club
  • Ezekial and Payton are now in the 200 club
  • Maddie finished 2 hours of work in IXL

This is really a great job for all our students and shows how they enjoy this challenge.  I must say that more often than not during free time our kids are on Raz-Kids or Explode the Code.  If you want your child to bring their headset back and forth from home to school let me know and I will pack it in their backpacks for Raz-Kids at home unless you have a computer with a microphone at home or another headset.

This week we have Remlinger Farm on Friday along with Pumpkin Carving Night.  Anyone who wants to help me decorate after school Friday please feel free to come and help.  Hint, hint.  Miss Mary and myself are leading the Pumpkin Carving Night activity and would love some help decorating for it.  We have enough drivers for the Remlinger Farm trip – Thank you chaperons!  I will assign you kids.  Please bring a backpack to pack the children lunches.  Please advise if your child needs a school lunch.  I will send out a separate email with a reminder to those joining the class trip.

We will leave Hillside at 9:30 (drivers take note of time to be here to pack the kids up) to arrive by 10:00  and get our stickers that allow us in and to get a pumpkin at the end of the day.  We will stay together as a class on a self-guided tour.  We will eat lunch on the grounds around 12:00 and leave the farm at 3:00 to return to school.

Star of the Week – Ezekial

Ezekial is 5 years old.  His favorite color is red.  His favorite animal is an elephant and favorite food cantaloupe.

Ezekial loves to go to the zoo, which is also his favorite place .  Flash (I think Gordon) is who he wants to grow up to be.  His favorite thing to do is play soccer and if he had one wish it would be to be rich.  Don’t we all wish that.

My Room Maps

Today we read The Plant.  It was a combination reading exercise and science lesson on plants and what they need to grow.  In another combination lesson we did a letter match (upper and lower case) and phonics exercise with Chester Letter Match of upper and lower case letters.

In computer lab it was Explode the Code, and for math lesson 3-4.  We finished out our day with presentations of the room maps the children brought in from home.

Remlinger Farm Trip permission slips in their folders.  Please rReturn them to me.

Day 25

In reading we read The Coast.  In handwriting it was capital letter “Y”.  We wrote the room with some difficulty finding “Y” words, but a few managed ten words.  We had time for most to journal before we did beginning sounds with the letter “C”.  The kids had music today.  Only a three star day in music so we lost a star in our homeroom and managed to end the day with only two stars.  In math it was lesson 3-3.  In science it was back to the senses and working in our Senses Journal.   I read them two books about the senses – Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear and  Me and My Senses.

Luke added a missing tooth to the missing teeth chart joining Tucker, Thomas, and Payton.

We celebrated milestones in IXL for :

  • Sydney – Two hours practice and 500 questions
  • Ezekial – One hour practice
  • Luke – Two hours practice

Phonics

Thank you parents for buying books for your children through Scholastic.  The class earns points which we can apply to new books for our classroom.

Today we read One Insect.  I like our in-class book series because in many cases it follows our math, science and social studies curriculum.  In handwriting we did capital letter “U and we wrote the room.  Not so many “U” words, but we managed to find some.  I introduced beginning sounds today in phonics.  The letter sound was “J”.  The children close their eyes and listen as I read a story and raise and lower their hand when they hear the letter sound.  This activity helps them tune into the sounds that form words.  It all lends itself to deciphering the words that we can sound out.  We had some time so we started another journal entry today.  Kids choice.  I modeled more clearly today the structure of sentences and what makes a sentence and a story.

Today the children had music with Miss Amy.  In Math it was review of the previous day’s lesson and then onto lesson 2-6.  We celebrated Luke for his IXL work of one hour of practice.  Wyatt joined the 200 club and also practiced for one hour at home.

Ezekial shared with us his adventure with Listening Dragon, and now Dragon is off to Jack’s house for a few days.

In science we continued with our lessons on the five senses.  We created a word bank and described what we use our senses for.

Reminders:

  • Curriculum Night is tomorrow 6:00 P.M.
  • Computer Lab tomorrow and Thursday if you can help.  I want to introduce Ra-Kids, the supplement to our in-class reading program.
  • Next Wednesday is our Walk-a-Thon.  We would really like to see each child get pledges for the 100% class participation award, and parents if you can manage to participate by cheering encouraging our school, by all means please come out and join us.
  • Next Thursday is our first field trip to Nature Vision.  Looking for parent support and drivers to Carnation.
