Curriculum Night

Today we read Out.  In handwriting it was capital “V”.  We added some new words to our “Word Wall” today.  In phonics it was beginning and ending sounds with the letter “T”.  We did have some time to journal as the kiddos get more comfortable journaling.  Those that finished early did some dot to dot’s.  In computer lab, with the help of Anna Paape, we did Explode the Code.  In Math it was Lesson 2-7.  We went outside for some fresh air while the weather stays with us.

Today we elected class representatives to the school Student Council.  Our lead representative is Annie, and our alternate is Tucker.  Congratulations to both of them.

I look forward to seeing many of you tonight.  If your questions are not answered please see me, send an email or call me.

IXL Math Introduction

Today we read My Family.  For handwriting it was capital “K”.  Children had PE today and judging by the sweaty heads it was a good workout for all, including Mr. Ken.  Today in the computer lab I had some help from Thomas and Jack’s mom, Anna, and from Rutger’s mom, Kristine.  I gave the kids a preview of the IXL math program in the morning.

IXL is meant to be done at home with a parent since the program does not read    the problems to them.  Much of IXL does not require the students to read and they quickly get the hang of it.  But some guidance from you early on will help them understand and be successful as they move along at a self directed pace.  Sabrina was the first student to hit the 100 problem mark of successful answers having jumped on it last night at home.  When the children hit these milestones I get an email and print out a certificate and we celbrate in the class during morning group.  IXL will not be a part of our regular computer lab time.  Students will  do it on the classroom computers but I want you to encourage them to use it at home, especially if they may be struggling somewhat with math.  Again as with any of the on-line programs, if you need some direction as parents please see me.

In Envision math we did Lesson 2-3.  I am going to repeat this lesson tomorrow.  Just as I expected, some students are having a hard time with the concept of more and less.  It’s the basis of addition and subtraction so it’s important for them to visualize this. In the classroom I use connecting cubes to demonstrate    The children also have cubes on their desks to help.  At home any objects can be used to help them understand more or less.  Today I used the example of having 3 cookies and if I ate 1 of them I would have 1 fewer, and thus have 2 cookies left.  Look at their worksheets and you will see how the problems are worded and how I have marked them to show each how to solve and think about the problem

In Social Studies we continued on our community unit with the concept that people are the most important elements of any community, be it Duvall, our classroom or our homes.  So we added people to our community board outside the classroom.  Look for your child’s house on the street they selected to move in. Flip up the house and under is the family (yours) that live there.  We will continue to build our community and talk about those things that compose a neighborhood and a community.

FYI I have scheduled our first field trip to Tolt/McDonald Park in Carnation on October 4th at 10:00 AM with Nature Vision.  While the weather is good we will go on a guided nature walk and look at some animal pelts and skulls, and then have lunch there.  After it is always a treat to stop at Taylor Park for some fun.  I am looking for parents who can drive or chaperon.  I will be sending home a permission slip shorty.

Reminder- tomorrow is Friday and Show and Tell.  Encourage them to bring something that is unique and special to them to share with the class should they wish to.

Duvall Library and Explode the Code

In reading we read In.  Our handwriting letter was capital “N”.  No time to write the room today as we had PE with Mr Ken.  We lost a half a star (3-1/2 out of 4), so our perfect record is broken but that’s OK.  It had to happen sooner or later. We had our first computer lab today.  Computer lab is every Wednesday and Thursday.  Thank you to Jack and Thomas’s mom, Anna, Sydney’s dad Scott and Tucker’s grand-dad, Gary, who came in to help me get the students all signed in and teaching them how to use the program.  This is part of our self-paced program that allows children to move ahead or back-up with their reading and phonic skills.  It really is the backbone of all we do – reading, reading, reading.  So practice with them at home using the program and getting themselves logged in.

Today was also our first Duvall Library Day with Mrs. Huber, our friendly librarian.  Kids listened to a few great stories.  My favorite is when Mrs, Huber tells a story from memory with her finger puppets.  The kids had a chance to shop for a book this trip.  Please remember to return the book to the library when finished, or to me to drop in the bin next to our classroom.   We could not squeeze math in today.

Listening Dragon

I have started to send home our stuffed animal mascot Listening Dragon.  Last week Alexica had the Dragon, and now Annie has him.  The object is to take him home for no longer than a week  and have your child read to Listening Dragon.  Take him with you and draw or take pictures of you and the dragon doing things and writing about it.  Simply look at the other children’s work and you will see what can be done.

Big

Dragon Gets By

Today we read Big in reading group.  So far everyone is with me as we continue a review of what they may have had in a preschool.  For handwriting it was capital letter “E”.  We had PE today with Mr. Ken.  I read Dragon Gets By to the children today, which is always a popular series of books about Dragon.  It is also fitting since we have our own dragon in the classroom, Puff.  In Envison Math we did lesson 1-2 .  I sent the Envision workbooks home with them today.  These are for you to use at home should you wish to.  The lessons here support what we are doing in the classroom.

Tomorrow is a special day as we have our first school assembly at 9:00 AM.  So if you can please try and stay for it.  I took the children over to new Duvall Library today to take a look at it and get an introduction from our friend Mrs. Huber.  Next week will will go over for story time and a book shop.  I have library cards for some students but not all.  If you don’t have a library card you can pick up applications at the library or I have them in the classroom.  I hold onto students’ cards in our classroom and bring them to the library so they can check out books.  Mrs.  Huber is very good about extending a checked out book.    As long as they are up to date with returning books, they will be able to check out one or two books each visit.  Please return your child’s books to the library or to me and I’ll drop them in the drop box.  Our first regular visit to the library will be next Thursday.  I do not have cards for the following students-

Need Library Cards
Alexcia, Annie, Hillary, Jack, Payton, Luke, Thomas, Tucker, Wyatt.

Need Change of  Clothes
Ezekial, Hillary, Payton, Luke, Tucker, and Wyatt.
