Oh My! 27 Days until school starts…

My oh my how summer has flown by.  My wife Indira and I spent the month of July in Maui with our daughter and grandchildren.  I have not been able to get back in the classroom to prepare it for this coming year as the summer programs are still going on at Hillside.  But, be assured I will have it ready by the Back to School Bash.  I look forward to meeting the children and families.

By now, for my new students, you should have received  your welcome packets from Hillside and I am getting ready to send out my own personal welcome letter.

I am so excited to hear that we will have an art teacher, and will be offering Sign Language this year in addition to Spanish.

Our class mascots, Puff the Bearded Dragon, and Bubba the Python, have been summering with Laina Brown’s family.  I visited them  and they both seemed excited about being back in the classroom with this years students, and seeing their old friends from last year..

Summer Birthday Bash

For reading we read Senses.  Adding science to reading is always a plus as I quizzed the kids on one of the first science units we had back in September.  We were able to get into the computer lab for a bit working on Explode the Code.  Returning to the classroom we worked some more on our Last Five Days Packet.  In math we did our final lesson 16-5, and took our unit test.  Everyone did really well! Next we will Step Up to First Grade Math to close our math year.
Today was all about summer birthdays as we celebrated Alex, Bentley, Mia, Hans, Laina, and Rylie’s birthday.  Thanks to the moms who provided everything for the birthday bash!  Your help this year was wonderful.

Advice Experts

As we enter our last full week we read My Neighborhood.  We played a few rounds of I Have, Who Has, with color and number words.  We tried to beat the best time for a treat.  After 6 rounds we finally did.  In writing we wrote a letter with advice for the incoming kindergarten class of 2012-2013.  I will give a copy of this letter to the next year’s kinders on welcoming day.
In math we did our end of Unit 15 assessment, and started Unit 16.
A reminder that tomorrow is our last visit to the Duvall Library.  Please bring in books tomorrow if you want me to return them.
On Wednesday we will have field day in the afternoon.  Insure your child is prepared for whatever weather is in store for us, and that they wear sneakers.
This Friday at 2:30 we will celebrate the summer birthday people – Hans, Alex, Bentley, Rylie, Laina, and Mia.

Here’s the advice the kids came up with:

  • No doing bad  stuff
  • No playing when not suppose to
  • Always do your best work
  • Be a good listener
  • Be a good friend
  • Help others
  • Don’t get your name on the board or flip a card
  • Save your money to get your name off the board
  • Don’t lose class stars
  • Share
  • Do your own work
  • Be nice
  • Don’t drop Bubba or Puff
  • Don’t shout out
  • No snakes behind the TV
  • Quiet hands, body and feet

Memorial Day Weekend

Today we read I Like My Hair.  We journaled today and began finishing our Explode the Code workbooks.  Kids had their last movement class.  There are no specialist for June.  We did our end of unit 14 test today, and the kids began their enrichment packet in class.  I read a couple books in an extended story time segment.  Scooby Doo, and Froggie’s First Kiss.
Enjoy your long weekend if you’re fortunate to have one.  Remember those that gave their full measure to keep us safe and free.

Reminders:

  • No School Monday
  • Duvall Days June 2nd  – Be a part of it.
  • I am thinking we have a birthday day for all our summer birthdays – Hans, Alex, Bentley, Laina, Mia. and Rylie.  Let me know if you would like to organize a party day for the birthdays
  • PJ Day next Friday?

Day 153

Today in reading we read Country Places.  For handwriting we did our May calendars.  Kids had Creative Movement.   I did the introduction to the MAPS test the children will be taking next week with Miss Kim.  I will review one more time how to take the test.  They should not have difficulties as the interface is very child friendly.  There is no time limit.  They can have the question repeated any number of times.
We put the finishing touches on our rainforest mural adding mammals to it. I read to them from Dr. Seuss’s, If I Ran the Rainforest?  For story time we made time for both Laina, and Mia to read stories from home to the class.

Decoupage

Decoupage, do not attempt this by yourself I quickly learned.
In reading we read What I Want?  In science our lesson was on Eggs, and Chicks.  In math we did lesson 13-5.
A good part of our day was taken up with our craft for Mother’s Day.  I learned a lot.  Make note to self – Get a parent volunteer, if you can, to help.  But it was well worth it I think.
We had Laina join our IXL 500 club today.  Way to go Laina!  Treats for all the girls.  Come on boys!

Day 130

Listening Dragon returned today from Laina’s home with some great pictures of her and Dragon. I hope you look through the book at what all the children write about and their adventures with Dragon.  Sedona will take Dragon home with her now.

Today we read Lucy Did It.  After morning recess we went to the computer lab for Explode the Code, and then went to another Flat Stanley rehearsal.  Kids had PE today.  Then we had our introduction to Envision Unit 11.  This will continue along our number sentence path with numbers 11 to 19.  After math it was back to the rainforest with a discussion about flowering plants and how they provide medicine for us. We then added them to our classroom rainforest.

Snail Races

Today we read I Wonder.  In handwriting we did the calendar for April.  In phonics we worked on filling in missed work due absences in our workbooks.  Most are done.
The kids had movement class today with our own Miss Kathleen (Caiden’s mom).  In social studies the kids started adding rain to our rainforest.  What is a rainforest without rain.  You know I did not think of that, but they did.  “Mr. M, don’t we need some rain?”
In math we did lesson 10-4 which brings to a close for this unit.  We will have our end of unit test next Monday.  I sent home math enrichment packets to be done at home.  In science we talked about land snails.
We conducted snail races and Laina’s snail won with Sedona’s snail a close second.  A few snails appeared to be sleeping.
We now have 6 chick eggs, and frog eggs are hatching.  Bubba shed his skin last night.  I did not realize it all comes off at once.  Very cool.
Enjoy your weekend and hopefully more good weather!

Back From Break, and in the home stretch

Welcome back everyone!  Today was a Fruit of the Spirit day and we talked about gentleness and what it means.  In reading we read How Many?  In handwriting it was letter “U’u”.  I did a short sentence dictation based on our reading today, and we did beginning and ending sounds in phonics.  Rylie read to us from a creative little book she composed of her favorite things.  In math we did our introduction to unit 10, and went right into lesson 10-1, working with the numbers 11, 12, and 13.  We celebrated Rylie and 10% fluency in IXL math, and Alex had multiple achievements for time spent in IXL and finishing 200 questions successfully.  Listening Dragon is home again. I sent him back out with Laina for the week.
Reminder that Spring Walk is coming up this Thursday.  Please try to get some pledges for your child.  Please return library books tomorrow to the classroom or drop them off at the library.  The Pizza Night coupons are in your red folders.  Money for our classroom basket for the auction can be left on my desk, or you my get with Tiffany about providing something for the basket.

Plants

Today in reading we read Feelings.  We again returned to the computer lab for an extensive Explode the Code lesson and practice.  I will begin to use a set time period for computer lab every Tuesday and Thursday.  This does not mean the children should not practice at home from time to time.  We will also do some IXL math on occasion int the lab.  Kids had PE today.  We celebrated Laina once again in achieving 10% proficiency, and two hours on IXL math.

Since nature has not been cooperating with finding land snails outside I have thrown a lesson or two on plants into our science block of time.  Today we talked about plants and what they need to grow.  We watched a wonderful video made for kids demonstrated the plant cycle from seed to fruit or flowers.
In the classroom we will create our own hydro garden and see if we can gleans
row lima beans.  More than a couple kids said yuck.  Each one has created a garden environment, and tomorrow we will plant our seeds.  As in keeping with science and experimentation, we will also try to grow three of our plants without one on the critical components plants need to grow – sun, water, and oxygen.  So we will plant one seed without benefit of sun,  one without water, and one without oxygen.  A poll of the children ‘s thoughts on the experiment is as follows:

  • 5 out of 9 children think that you cannot grow plants in a bag, PERIOD.
Now, assuming that we can get something to grow:
  • 7 out of 9 think you need soil to grow plants.
  • 7 out of 9 think the seed that is deprived of oxygen will NOT grow
  • 8 out of 9 think the seed deprived of sun will NOT grow
  • 7 out of 9 think the seed deprived of water will NOT grow.
Nice to see most believe what they hear or believe in.  We will see how this plays out.
