Kelso

Today we read Fall.  In handwriting it was letters “P,p”.  Kids journaled, their choice.  We did beginning and ending sounds.  Today was one of those days when tattling just went over the top.  So, I took out Kelso, courtesy of my wife’s college education project last year.  We talked in class about big problems and small problems, and how we can solve our own small problems.  They have a take home chart of how Kelso tries and solves his own problems.

In case that does not completely solve the issue I put up a tattle jar. You have a tattle – Write about it.  Amazing how for most this exercise in itself minimizes tattles.

In math we did lesson 9-4.

Celebrations in order for Laina completing 200 questions, and Rylie finishing 500 questions.  Awesome accomplishments!
I was also encouraged to see almost everyone dive into the math challenge box to complete this self-paced activity this afternoon instead of end of day free choice.

Almost, almost.

The children feel sure they did capture leprechauns last night.  If a leprechaun is caught, he must turn over his pot of gold, and since each of our traps had a pot of gold in it this morning we may have set the record for the most leprechauns caught in a single evening.

In reading we read in honor of Han’s heritage, The Animals of Canada.  We are now into reading level “C” books.  In looking forward it is entirely possible that we get to level “D” books, which are first grade level. We have Creative Movement today and only had a chance to journal.  The topic was eagles.  I choose eagles as I had two fly so close to my car today that I felt it was a sign.  So I also bought two lotto tickets.  The good life here I come.
In science we continued with Animals Two By Two with a discussion of what fish need to survive. The kids changed water, and moved the fish from one tank to another along with the plants, and fed them.
For math we began Unit 9 with more addition and subtraction.

Green Eggs and Ham

For reading it was What Has This Tail?  In group I read the Seuss classic Green Eggs and Ham.  We followed that up with making green eggs and ham.  Most everyone tried them, but not all.  I pointed out (and they knew) that the book was about trying things, and not just saying you don’t like something.

For a craft we did some coloring and then the kids brain stormed some of the lines in the book.  “I would not eat them on a train”.   I displayed their work on out outside B-Board.  For story time I read  One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  In science we again talked about fish care and made predictions on how the fish would react to placing a fish tunnel (plastic cup with holes cut in two sides).  So far both the guppy group and the goldfish group want no part of it.  We will see if they lose their apparent fear.
In math I went old school working just on the white board with challenging addition math problems done in the conventional way.  Each child had a choice of a “hard” math problem or a “challenge” problem.  I also added to our Math Challenge self-paced enrichment, a packet of progressively more difficult math problems appropriate for kindergarten and early 1st grade for those who want to take the challenge.  Please spend some time helping them and encouraging them.  Math is one of those subjects  that kids, and adults, either love or really avoid doing.  Now is the time to turn them on to it.  Kids were with Miss Amy today for music.  I could hear the tribal sounds of drums as I approached the room to pick them up.  We wound up the day with some kids deep into the math challenge and others watching The Cat In the Hat.

100 Days Whew!!

We made it to 100 days in school!  It was milestone that we celebrated in style!!  We counted to 100 by one’s, and skip counted by two’s, five’s, and ten’s.  I hid 100 Hershey’s kisses around the room and we found everyone of them.  Counting as we found them.  Each child presented their 100 Day item.  Candy by far was the most popular item that was brought in.  Bentley’s paper chain, and Sedona’s necklace were very creative additions to the bring from home items.  Weston brought in 100 balls of all sorts.  Rylie brought cotton balls.   We took Bubba and Puff out for the festivities as my nine smart cookies, enjoyed their snicker doodle treat.  I sent home 100math problems,  that if completed and brought back in, will earn rewards.
In reading we read Three Baby Birds.  In handwriting we did the letter “E, e”, and wrote the room.  For phonics we played site word bingo, and had three winners.

Fruit of the Spirit – Joy

Today we talked about what joy is, and what it means to us.  How do we express joy and how we feel when we feel it.  We spoke about the great joy people must have felt when Jesus performed miracles.

In reading we read The Picnic.  Remember to take time out to read to your children, and if at all possible for them to read their daily take home book to you.

Valentine’s day was so busy last week that we didn’t get to finish one of our crafts- so we did that today.  What better way to remember our Crazy Hair Day than to have a picture of us in a decorated frame!

In handwriting it was letters “B,b”.  In Explode the Code we almost finished our Lesson 3 Workbook.  I began Science with an introduction to Animals Two by Two.  We discussed the features that make animals seem somewhat similar, when they are in fact different – like a horse and a zebra, or a duck and a crane.  We are developing our eyesight, as scientists do, to identify the things we look at.

In math it was lesson 7.6, with this unit almost at an end.  We had music today, and for choice time we watched the DVD of the performance from the Christmas play.

I took pictures of the kids with their Uglydolls, and read from our Uglyville book.

Happy Valentine’s Day – Share the Love

Today’s classroom  reading book was Paint It Purple.  My favorite color, if you did not know it yet.  Alex won the estimation jar this week.  Come to think of it, Alex has had a knack for estimating, as does Laina.  We finished our Valentine’s Day marathon of books with Love, Spat, and Clifford Finds Love.  We completed our Handwriting Without Tears workbook today with poems.  We will now go back through the alphabet once more with a little twist to it.  We will practice both upper and lower case together, and sentence writing for each letter. The kids filled out their February calendars and not one mistake was made.  I am totally impressed!  After lunch we had PE with Mr. Ken.  Then we read our Valentine’s Day Let’s Find Out magazine.  Finally, on the academic side, we did math lesson 7.3.  I have sent home the enrichment packet to do at home based on the previous unit we have finished.  You need not return unless you want to.

Now with the children totally tortured to get into party mode, I made them do one more mini craft – finger puppets, while Heather (Bentley’s mom), and Nicole (Laina’s mom) set up for the party.  Thank you bunches for your help, and the treats that came in, and for the party!  The kids exchanged cards, gifts, and were totally sugared up for their parents to deal with tonight.  Been there, done that, and I know your pain.  Check out the pictures in the photo stream to the right.

Seven Little Monkeys

Today we read Maria and Her Teacher.  In handwriting it was magic “c” revisited, and rhyming words.  The children had creative movement today with Miss Rachel, and things were all a-buzz about the spring play.  For math we did lesson 7-2 working with number sentences, and we finished the day before the assembly with social studies and decorating the heritage floats.  I have sent them home with their floats to work on with you.

We were the host class for today’s chapel and performance.  We did a rendition of Five Little Monkeys.  The children did great.  Voices were clear and loud and our audience was very appreciative I am sure.  Two of our classmates, Bentley and Weston were awarded our schools Character Counts award this month at the assembly.  A special shout out to them for always trying their best, and being respectful , and kind.

Monthly Chapel

Today we read Up and Down.  Next week will will begin level 2 books. At home reading has slowed down some.  Please encourage them to read to you.  I am told by nearly all that they read to you every night their class book of the day.  We are on the honor system.

At morning group we celebrated Laina achieving her first hour of IXL Math at home.  We also celebrated Han’s accomplishment of finishing 500 questions in IXL Math at home.  Yes, 500 questions! Congratulations to both of them.

In handwriting it was lower case ‘
“l” today.  Most of the kids can now  “read and write” the room and manage a sentence or two in their writing journal.

Today was creative movements class.  In math we did Envision 5.4 and I will do an assessment next week before moving on to numbers 21-30.  Please note that while your child may be able to count to 20, 30 or even a hundred, most are having problems when it comes to counting objects like you see in their daily Envison worksheets that they bring home.  They seem to easily get confused or skip a number when they are counting larger numbers.  I have shown them some strategies to minimize mistakes such as putting a tick next to each object or to write the number above it (1,2,3,4) so that they account for every object.

Our assembly was a spirit day one,  I encourage the children to wear their school shirts.  If you don’t have one please consider buying one.

Upcoming events

  • Duvall Library next Tuesday  Bring your books in or drop off yourself
  • January 26 and 27 Parent Teacher Conferences – I will put a sign-up sheet on the door or up front where you walk in.
  • February 11 Sweethearts Night Out – Consider dropping your child off at the school and go refresh your relationship with someone you love.
  • Still need some headphones for the kiddies that do not have them.  We will be spending more time in the computer lab and really don’t need to spread ear infections, and head creepy little things.
  • I am thinking about a field trip to Seattle Children’s Museum at end of this month or early February.  Please let me know if you will consider driving.  Probably need 3-4 cars.  If anyone has other suggestions let me know.

Our Hair

Today we read What I Am for reading.  I have started sending Listening Dragon home again.  Today it went home with Laina to be returned next Monday.  Encourage them to write about their experiences.  Look at the other entries.  Look to see if the writing is improving.  While they can have some help (sounding and writing what they hear), I want them to write.

In handwriting we did lowercase “i”.  The children again today were encouraged to “read and write the room”, coming up with as many ‘I” words as they can find.  They discovered the World globe and map and a flood of activity occurred as they looked for countries and states that begin with “I”.

Our word wall is growing and we spent sometime taking words off our wall and constructing complete sentences.  In phonetics we worked in our workbook on the letter “H”.  Do you hear the “H” sound at the beginning or end of the word.  They then select the correct spelling and write the word.
The children also journaled today, some even twice over the course of the day.  We did not have Spanish today, so we had some extra time.

In science it was about hair today.  I sent homework home for them to do.  They will need your help with it.  Please return it for our next science class on Friday.

In math we moved on to lesson 5-2, and the numbers 13, 14, and 15.  You might look for erase marks as an indicator of a mistake on their worksheet.  Sometimes it may not be a mistake as I will have them re-write a number if I feel it’s too sloppy.  I am encouraging them to double check their work, as they often make careless counting errors.  So erasing may not always mean that they don’t understand or made a mistake.

Christmas Break

Today the Kids enjoyed a laid-back fun day to end the year.  PJ’s and pillow pets were the order of the day.  Gift exchange and fun with their big buddies constructing graham cracker houses.  Note for next year-  model making houses before they start.  Candy was in abundant supply, but, you can’t ever have enough royal frosting (glue).

Congratulations go out to Mia and Caiden for demonstrating  life skills that go beyond the expected.  Their stars join Sedona, Alex, and Laina from our class as Hillside Academy students who’s Character Counts.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday, and look forward to seeing you next year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year to all.
